About the Painting:
We don’t know if Mrs. Whistler was actually this somber and elegant, or if her portrait is just a reflection of tough Victorian days. But here she is, immortalized by her son in a painting he originally titled “Arrangement in Grey and Black No. 1.” If your pet is elegant, refined, and just a tad disapproving of your life choices, they’ll fit perfectly (and quite hilariously) in this portrait.
About James Abbott McNeill Whistler:
Jimmy was a creative whirlwind, with over 500 paintings credited to his name. We’re pretty sure he started every day staring into his reflection and chanting “today I will create a masterpiece.”
Jimmy was a walking artist stereotype — he had eyes so piercing they could hem a shirt, a curly mustache, and he often wore a monocle. Jimmy was witty and spoke in a way that his friend described as “sketching in words,” and Oscar Wilde (yes, that Oscar Wilde) would frequently repeat the things Jimmy said. One time, Oscar even said “I wish I’d said that,” to which Jimmy replied “You will, Oscar . . . you will.”
